ACT Tutoring FAQ

Common questions about the ACT and our tutoring program. Have a question not listed here? Visit our full FAQ page or contact us.

What sections are on the ACT?

The Enhanced ACT has three core sections: English (75 questions, 45 minutes), Math (60 questions, 60 minutes), and Reading (40 questions, 35 minutes). Science and Writing are now optional sections. Your composite score is based on the three core sections, each scored 1-36, and averaged to produce your final composite.

How long is the ACT?

The Enhanced ACT takes approximately 2 hours for the three core sections (English, Math, Reading). If you choose to add optional sections, Science adds 40 minutes and Writing adds 40 minutes. The test is available in both digital and paper formats.

How is the ACT scored?

Your ACT composite score is the average of your three core section scores (English, Math, Reading), each on a 1-36 scale, rounded to the nearest whole number. Optional Science and Writing scores are reported separately and do not affect your composite. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should answer every question.

How much can ACT tutoring improve my score?

Our students improve an average of 4.3 composite points, with top improvements reaching 10 points. The amount of improvement depends on your starting score, how much time you dedicate to preparation, and how consistently you follow your study plan. Students who complete 10 or more hours of tutoring and follow their practice schedule see the strongest results.

When should I start ACT prep?

We recommend starting ACT preparation 3 to 6 months before your test date. This gives enough time for a thorough diagnostic, targeted instruction, and multiple rounds of practice testing. Many students begin the spring of their junior year, but sophomores looking to get ahead and seniors who need a score boost can also benefit significantly from structured prep.

ACT vs SAT - which test should I take?

The best test depends on your individual strengths. The ACT tends to favor students who work quickly and are strong in science reasoning, while the SAT is adaptive and may suit students who prefer a slower pace with fewer questions. We recommend taking a diagnostic for both tests to see which format plays to your strengths. Our tutors can help you decide based on your results.

How does online ACT tutoring work?

Our online ACT tutoring sessions are conducted via video call with screen sharing, a digital whiteboard, and shared documents. Your tutor walks through problems in real time, assigns targeted homework through our platform, and tracks your progress between sessions. Online tutoring is just as effective as in-person sessions and offers greater scheduling flexibility.

What makes The Score Movers different from other ACT tutoring services?

We focus exclusively on personalized one-on-one instruction, not group classes or generic video courses. Every student gets a customized study plan based on diagnostic data, a dedicated expert tutor matched to their learning style, and ongoing progress tracking. Our 100% score improvement rate across students who complete our recommended hours speaks for itself.
